Is the highest DPS always the best unit?
No. Cost, range, target count, wave timing, mode and support can decide whether a unit helps your run.

Use a repeatable combat checklist to solve the wave that actually stops your runs.
Updated

The best team is the one that answers the current map and mode. Record the enemy or wave where your defense fails. If many weak enemies pass together, the problem may be coverage; if one durable target survives, it may be focused damage. Those are hypotheses to test in the game, not hidden mechanics we claim the game uses in every mode.
Look at what each equipped unit contributes: affordable early placement, sustained damage, area coverage, long range or support if the client shows it. Do not fill every slot with a unit that does the same job merely because each is rare. A balanced roster helps you spend resources when each threat appears.
If the game limits placement or team size in a particular mode, use that current limit in your plan. We have not verified a permanent global limit, so this guide does not print one.
To compare DPS, record damage over a time window, attack interval, level, upgrade path, buffs and target count. A multi-target hit can outperform a higher single-target number in one wave and underperform against a boss in another. Range and placement cost also determine how often the unit gets to attack.
The public pages we checked quote different 'best DPS' values with no common test conditions. The Tier List therefore provides a measurement standard instead of an unsupported S tier.
If your early placements cannot stabilize the opening waves, a late expensive upgrade will not help you reach it. If the opening is comfortable but a later wave fails, test whether saving for a stronger upgrade changes that specific outcome. Change one thing at a time so the reason for improvement is visible.
A high-value unit may be scarce or fashionable. The value list can help you understand the cost of acquiring it, but the team test decides whether it earns a slot. Conversely, a low-value defender could still solve your immediate wave. Do not remove a proven team unit just because an offer looks numerically favorable.
An event may add enemies, a mode may change placement rules and a balance patch may alter attacks. Save the date and mode next to every result. If a unit changes, rerun the same comparison before repeating old advice. The guide's update log is a reminder of what has been checked, not an official changelog.
